Risk Management

Trading Risk Management

The framework that decides whether a strategy survives a losing streak.

Risk per trade comes first

Fix the dollar amount you are willing to lose on a trade, then let the stop distance determine share size. Never let the share size determine the risk.

Daily and weekly limits

A daily loss limit stops one bad session from becoming a bad month. A weekly limit stops a bad week from becoming a rebuild.

Expectancy over accuracy

Win rate alone says nothing. A strategy that wins 40 percent of the time with a 3:1 payoff outperforms one that wins 70 percent with a 1:2 payoff.

Use the calculators

The TradeCaster position size and risk/reward calculators exist so the arithmetic is done before the market opens, not during a fast move.
