Market Orders vs Limit Orders

Speed versus price control, and when each order type helps or hurts.

Marcus Obi · Updated March 2026 · 5 min

Market orders buy certainty of fill

A market order fills at whatever price is available. In fast or thin markets that can be several cents worse than the last print, which is slippage.

Limit orders buy certainty of price

A limit order will not fill worse than your stated price, but it may not fill at all. Missing an entry is a real cost when the setup then works without you.

How traders mix them

Many traders enter with limits and exit risk with market or stop orders, on the logic that getting out matters more than getting a perfect price.
